What follows are some suggestions for those people who prayed the prayer you saw on the previous page (or for those who prayed such a prayer at some time in the past) and you would like to know what you should be doing next. The first thing you should know, remind yourself of, and be convinced of for the rest of your life is that there is nothing you can do to improve, maintain, preserve, or otherwise keep your salvation and righteous standing before God. Jesus has accomplished everything …EVERYTHING … that is or ever will be necessary for you to be forgiven and to stand pure and righteous before the Holy Father in heaven. Just hold on to that fact and so much of the Christian life and your walk with Jesus will be less confusing for you. If someone puts a hundred million dollars ($100,000,000.00) into your checking account, but you never use that money for anything—it just sits there—wouldn’t you consider that to be a wasted opportunity? Even though it would be true that you are a millionaire, if you never use any of the money you would still live like a person who doesn’t have a lot of money. This is the way it would be if even though you are a Christian, what if you never took advantage of all the riches that are yours in Christ for this life. Yes, you will go to heaven when you die because you have the righteousness of Christ, but don’t you want to start taking advantage of all the many and beautiful blessings that are yours in Christ for this life right now?

All of those blessings for this life (and there are VERY many of them) come out of a close daily walk with Jesus. So, how do you develop a close daily walk with Jesus? You have to get to know Him better, and learn to desire the things He desires. How do you do that? You have to spend time often reading the Bible.

The Bible is an incredible gift to us from God that has the power to change all sorts of things about our perspective on what’s important in life, about how to treat others as Jesus would treat them, about the really awesome things about God that will continually fill your life with light and joy and praise for the greatness of God, about how to overcome great difficulties in your life, about how to be at peace in your soul, about how to tell truth from lies, about how to have wisdom and all the benefits that come from acting wisely in complicated situations, and the list goes on and on. How do you access all these benefits? Spend time often reading the Bible and praying to God to show you what He wants you to understand from what you are reading. This is the single most important thing you can be doing to develop a rich fellowship with Jesus and learn to walk like He walks. In addition to holding on the truth that Jesus has already eternally secured your righteous standing before God (and there is nothing you or anyone else can do to mess it up), and in addition to developing a vibrant daily walk with Jesus by prayerfully reading the Bible often, you would be well served by taking advantage of the fellowship of believers. Find some others who have trusted in Jesus Christ for their salvation and get together with them often to pray, praise God in song, be taught from the Bible, and share your experiences of the provisions of God in your life. Most people find the best way to do this is to start going to a church that will help and encourage them in their walk with Jesus.
